Welcome, everyone, to my new blog! (The posts proir to this one were snagged off of the field guide at rewild.info). A lot has happened in the last few months. For one I’ve started working full-time doing botanical surveys to measure any positive impact that the lower deer density Pennsylvania has experienced in last few years might have on plant regeneration. On one hand it’s not so bad. I’m outside all day long, I get to travel to new and different places in the forest and see plants and animals I don’t normally see. However, the work is boring and repetitive, it takes up all my time, and I’d rather be foraging (bumper sticker anyone?).
Another big thing that happened is Urban Scout came to visit me! We’ve known eachother online for awhile in various contexts: internet stalker and stalkee, turned friends, turned online boyfriend and girlfriend. Now you could consider us star-crossed lovers who because of our stubborn roots on opposite sides of the continent, have to settle for being creative business partners. You can read Scout’s verision of the story here: An Anarcho-Primitivist Romance, here: Week12: From Cave to Grave With Penny Scout, here: Whiskey in the Yarrow! and finally here: Week13: Smokin’ Peace With Penny. But really no blog can do the week justice.

If you read that first entry of Urban Scout’s you may notice quite a bit of drama in the comments. That drama didn’t exactly end when he returned to Portland. In fact, it resulted in my moving out of my parent’s house and into the woods full-time. Ironically, my ex-boyfriend Rock Scout, a.k.a Nick in previous posts, has also moved into the woods full-time (prior to my decision and in different location than me) and, not having a job, is living in a much more primitive fashion than I. He is actually foraging for his meals whereas I’m still going to the grocery store every week and eating pizza about, oh, every day. We’ve decided we have too much in common not to speak or work together on certain projects, so he may show up in future blogs, despite the standard warnings and concerns and a tumultuous last few weeks.

What?!? No cred for creating this site for you?

Ah, I thought maybe you wanted to keep the depth of your devotion a secret
Silly me. Yeah, Urban Scout knew I wanted a blog so he signed up for it, yanked the old articles from Rewild, pretty much everything except for this last post a few minor touch-ups.

I hope you’re current adventure- (suddenly quitting your job and heading for parts unknown) is a feral success. The stuff from your camp is securely stored now. You’ve left only footprints, and a recliner. Take care! They have AIDS there.

Hmm. Since you live in the woods now, where can I send the trade goods we previously discussed on the REWILD forum?

Hi Penny,
. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who has trouble finishing projects. I find that it’s a lot easier to finish things when you’ve got other people to do them with. You keep each other motivated and you don’t get so lonely. When I try to do things by myself, I tend to get lonely, depressed, and discouraged and I end up giving up at the first difficulty.
I’m enjoying your blog so far, keep up the good work
